Philosophical and Political Aspects of Lord the Flies Essay -- Lord Fl
Philosophical and Political Aspects of Lord the Flies   â â Is sufficiently simple to make an expansive speculation about philosophical, political or even strict understandings on each book ( regardless of whether we consider religion here and there vinculated to theory), however as a general rule the issue is an amazingly unpredictable one. It would be so agreeable to decrease a story to a minor wellspring of outside references and to lose all the subtleties that make writing a unique wonder; Iâ'm not saying writing is just style yet it must not be stifled to its substance. What's more, sadly, that is a commonplace contemporary eccentricity.   â â This not just occurs in writing; for instance, in childrenâ's movies, where the substance should be political unexisting, there consistently shows up someone who attempts to give the film a second political perusing, attempting hence to quantify its incentive by any abstract remark. It would show up then that a few manifestations need more intrigue whenever saw from an impartial perspective.   â â The truth is that writing is certifiably not a minor good eulogistic theme. In this exposition we will attempt to differentiate a few translations, essentially concentrating on philosophical and political perspectives, including religion if important.   â â various key issues emerge from the simbology of the book. The story is a moral story followed with incredible ability and permits the peruser to give the book second readings.   â â Firstly, we might want to clarify some potential implications of the islands as a similitude. When surrounding the book on an island, the authorâ's motivation is to uninhibitedly explore different avenues regarding the characters and the ... ...oo when he wouldn't like to perceive being inferred on Simon's homicide.   â â Perhaps the motivation to be gained from this book is that we as a whole shroud a dictator, or a malevolence, or a dull intuition which must be relinquished for living in the public eye. Possibly those highlights are normal; however the individual is additionally social essentially, thus the deadly clash could be natural and unavoidable inside ourselves. 'The Lord of the Flies' couldn't be an extraordinary inquiry yet a unimportant clarification of what we are. A clarification of mankind's history and a worry wart message for the individuals who put stock in perfect world. Anyway, if cynicism is a hindrance, it is additionally a test to be confronted; and by confronting inconvenience, in the event that you are not pulverized, you will most likely look at that there is a great deal of truth in this essentially, known yet overpowering expression: whatever doesn't slaughter you makes you more grounded.

Individuals have various view of mental fortitude constantly; some think it is a man with a weapon close by; some consider fearlessness to be mental solidarity to continue on and withstand peril, dread, or trouble; others think mental fortitude is a common individual, doing uncommon things; or in any event, going to bat for what is correct, regardless of whether you are remaining solitary. Atticus, Bob Ewell, and Mrs.Dubose each uncover mental fortitude in various manners, regardless of whether that way isn't indicating any mental fortitude whatsoever. Atticus Finch feels genuine mental fortitude is when " you realize you're licked previously you start yet you start in any case and you oversee it to the end regardless what." (p.112) With this meaning of fortitude, Atticus would be viewed as an amazingly bold man. Tom Robinson was being blamed for assaulting a white young lady during the 1930s in Alabama. As a result of the manner in which blacks were dealt with at that point, clearly the odds of Tom Robinson leaving the town hall guiltless were pretty much nothing. At the point when Atticus takes the instance of Tom Robinson he says it is the "one case in the course of his life that influences him personally." African American Studies: The Underground Railroad (Essay Sample) Content: AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIESNameCourseDateAfrican American StudiesThe Underground RailroadIn the African American studies, the Underground Railroad plays an important part in black history and road to freedom. The Underground Railroad gained national recognition in the 1830s to refer to the channel of deep routes followed by slaves in the process of finding freedom in the northern states and Canada aided by slave abolitionist and well-wishers such as Harriet Tubman. Although it is called the Underground Railroad, there were no physical tunnels or rails used by slaves, but rather it is a coined term to refer to the secretive nature of their activities and routes of lines used by southern slaves to move to northern states. Harriet Tubman is a prominent figure in the African American history since she aided in freeing many slaves from their masters and gave them freedom in Canada and northern states. In addition, the help of the Quaker people, the Underground Railroad became successful and the daring slaves escaped the hands of their ruthless owners and gained freedom. The activities in the Underground Railroad was risky and challenging, and only the brave succeeded to gain freedom. The process involved a chain of events before reaching the promised land of Canada or other better states. First, the abolitionist and Quaker people played the role of sneaking out the slaves during the night and the secretive routes and positioned them in the stations or safe house along the road. On the other hand, the conductors were vital in ensuring the slaves find the next stop and avoid the abductors who collected the slaves back to the owners. The Underground Railroad showed unity among the blacks and white and serve a significant mark in antislavery movement and road to freedom. In addition, the road network made the society realize the problems slaves underwent and brought them together to fight and abolish slavery in the southern states thereby changing history.[L arry Gara, the Liberty Line: The Legend of the Underground Railroad. University Press of Kentucky, 2013.] Moreover, on the other hand, the slave masters were angry for losing their property which threatened their institution. The slave owners hired slave hunters to collect their assets and bring back to the farms. The Native Americans who experienced the same fate of discrimination by white majority aided the slaves by killing the slave hunters thereby extending the railroad networks. In American history, the Underground Railroad serves as a union of African-American, Native Americans and white to join and fight for a common purpose. The slavery was harsh and ruthless, and the union of the three race to fight wrong things unites the American people. Under the governance of Abraham Lincoln, slavery was abolished, and blacks could live in freedom. However, the scars of slavery took years to heal since the enmity between the blacks and whites stills cripples progress of the United Stat es.The Harlem RenaissanceLangston HughesIn the book, Creating Black Americans, Nell Painter shows how the Harlem Renaissance brought together black arts and literature in Manhattan. Opposition of Societal Ideals in Hawthornes Stories - Literature Essay Samples
Nathanial Hawthorne, in the two different, yet morally similar stories, â€Å"Young Goodman Brown†and â€Å"Artist of the Beautiful,†displays his opinions on dominant doctrines of society. Hawthorne expresses that the protagonists in each of the stories struggle to succeed within their emotional and social identities as they chose unconventional paths within their societies. Though Brown and Owen are able to succeed individually as they pursue their own ideals, they fail in the eyes of their surrounding societies. The society in â€Å"Young Goodman Brown†strictly follows the rules and principles of its religion. To become an honorable Puritan, one is required to always mistrust himself and any others (4). The entire community abides by this Puritan doctrine, which requires that each person undergo a conversion experience in which he acknowledges his internal faults and sins. Brown, a Puritan awaiting official membership to the religion, begins his trial on the conversion experience. As a Puritan, Brown must acknowledge his unworthiness of God’s Grace and constantly reexamine himself to make sure that his sins are not forgotten (1). If Brown gains membership as a Puritan, he will join the rest of his society in living by the Puritan doctrine.Similar to Brown, Owen Warland exists in a society that adheres to the ideals of a specific doctrine. Throughout the course of his career, Owen is the subject of skepticism and scorn as a result of his efforts to create an interpretation of the Beautiful. His passion for creating the Beautiful interferes with his life in a society completely dominated by the utilitarian lifestyle. The utilitarian society follows the ideal that all men strive to produce goods which serve a useful purpose in everyday life. The Utilitarian doctrine is so widely accepted in Owen’s society that even his family hopes â€Å"that his strange ingenuity might thus be regulated, and put to utilitarian pur poses†(361). Robert Danforth, a blacksmith in Owen’s community, is a direct symbol of the Utilitarian doctrine. As a blacksmith, he produces many useful goods, unlike Owen, who struggles in completing his single invention. Because of Robert’s consistently manufactured goods, society sees the product of his work, and therefore values his utilitarian lifestyle much more than Owen’s lifestyle of creating platonic beauty.Throughout Brown’s journey, he expresses his hesitance in proceeding into his meeting with the devil. At the beginning of the conversion experience, Brown is very ashamed to continue into the forest, in which â€Å"‘the devil himself should be at [his] very elbow!’†(27). Brown is fearful that someone may catch a glimpse of him interacting with the devil, showing his shame for going on his conversion experience. Despite all of this concern, he continues forth in the Puritan journey of finding the Satan within h imself. However, as Brown reaches the finale of the conversion experience and prepares to become an official Puritan, he cannot accept the Puritan belief that man is always evil. His wife, Faith, is the influence in Brown that keeps him pure of the devil. The innocent pink ribbons that she wears, along with her spiritual name, symbolizes her purity. However, at the end of Brown’s conversion experience, he is shocked to see that Faith is interacting with the devil because he considers her to be the most pure person in society. Nevertheless, Brown resists Satan despite his love for Faith, and he escapes the conversion experience.Though Brown is unsure of proceeding on the conversion experience, Owen suffers a more internal dilemma. He is quite unsure of himself as a person. His progress stalls at moments of depression brought on by his lack of confidence; a brief comment may even put an end to all of Owen’s determination to build his invention. As Annie illustra tes, Owen’s â€Å"ears are as delicate as his feelings, and you know how easily disturbed they are†(359). Annie is the one force in Owen’s life that provides him with inner stability. A friend of Owen’s since childhood, he believes that Annie holds the key to the completion of his invention and â€Å"this young girl possesse[s] the gift to comprehend him, better than all the world beside†(369). Despite the fact that she is the daughter of a man who is critical of Owen, Owen believes that with her support, he could prove his success. However, as Owen learns of Annie’s engagement to Robert, his rival, an internal strength builds within him. This strength leads to an inner development within Owen, allowing him to â€Å"[lose] his faith in the invisible, and now [pride] himself†(376).By choosing the unlikely, yet brave decision of exiting the conversion experience, Brown makes it clear that he stands against the Puritan doctrine of his fellow townspeople â€Å"reject[ing] the society which has nurtured him†(4). It is clear that this decision makes him a failure in the eyes of the surrounding society because he disregards the most central beliefs of that society (1). Brown is a failure by the standards of society, yet he becomes highly successful at a personal level. Brown defies his peers’ beliefs, knowing that he is the only one to stand up for his personal beliefs. His unlikely decision brings him personal success because he holds the insight of the Puritan principles by which his neighbors live, while he himself lives a life free from Puritanism. Even though Brown lives a dark life â€Å"because an anthem of sin rush[s] loudly upon his ear and drown[s] all the blessed strain,†(36), he is relieved that he doesn’t have to continue his life abiding by the Puritan doctrine.Meanwhile, Owen presents his invention to Annie and her new family, and he realizes that he no longer needs Annie’s encouragement to be happy. Owen â€Å"glance[s] sidelong at Annie, to discover whether she sympathize[s] in her husband’s estimate of the comparative value of the Beautiful and the Practical,†and he â€Å"rises out of the region in which such a discovery might have been torture,†(382). Owen gains a rare confidence within himself that allows him to personally succeed. As he overcomes the utilitarianism principle, he learns to disregard anyone’s opinion but his own. Although Owen succeeds at a personal level, Peter Hovenden, Annie’s father, â€Å"bursts into a cold and scornful laugh†symbolizing Owen’s failure in society (385). Because Peter used to be a watchmaker, he is a symbol for the utilitarian society. Therefore, his negativism towards Owen symbolizes society’s disapproval of Owen’s completed creation of the Beautiful. Even though Owen has a finished product of his tedious work, Peter ’s mockery expresses that this product is frowned up because it is platonic and does not pertain to the utilitarianism doctrine. As Brown and Owen face like challenges of choosing their personal ideals over the ideals of their societies, they obtain similar results in terms of succeeding. As evident through the characters, Hawthorne displays that although both men are able to personally succeed, they fail in the eyes of their societies. Nonetheless, both of the protagonists overcome dynamic experiences, becoming internally strong and willing to continue forth with the pursuit of their own beliefs.

Should The Police Officer Be Suspended For Exercising His...
Early November 2016, a Michigan police officer was suspended for flying a Confederate flag from his pickup truck at a rally protesting the election of Donald Trump. The officer later resigned after his suspension. The confederal flag has several implication in United States. Many claim that flying of the Confederate flag is protected by the first amendment and regardless the implication it has on society, because individuals has the liberties to do so. Should the police officer be suspended for exercising his first Amendment right? Although, the police officer was merely exercising his first amendment right, he is a public servant. As a public servant a police officer voluntarily surrender some of their rights and delegate them to the community in which they serve. Undoubtedly, officers have a constitutional right to free speech, but also a code of conduct and other internal policies to abide by. Therefore, displaying of the confederate flag during the public gathering as a police officer is questionable and a potential violation to the department’s code of conduct. A police department’s â€Å"code of ethics†typically exists separately from the formalized set of rules and regulation. Normally, the code is imbedded within the department’s rules. Over the years, many law enforcement agencies have been instituting a distinct code of ethics upon their officers. A code of ethics, is defined as â€Å"a broader conceptual statement of expected agency goals and officer conduct. Global Issue Disposable Workers
Question: Discuss about theGlobal Issuefor Disposable Workers. Answer: Introduction The recession at global level results in number of retrenchments in corporate world, and only reason behind this retrenchment is unemployment which already reaches at heights, and those people who are able to save their jobs are forced to work at low pay scales. Other consequences of this present economic environment are increase in number of temporary employees or employees on contingent basis. Changes in technology have great impact on the decision of the management because advanced technology reduces the need of human resources. Technology advancement is the big reason which directly affects the number of employments by performing that task which is performed by individual (Potocki Brocato, 1995). As per one survey, similar situations are remained for next 5 to 10 years which result in small salaries, worse working conditions, and very low level of job security. According to Peter Cappelli, who works in the University of Pennsylvanias Wharton School states that employers are trying to get rid from their employees at all fixed costs but before they did this by cutting down the benefits available to employees but not they are directly take away the job of employee. In todays era everything is variable as these corporate actions are take place because of less profitability. However, it is clear that data collected from financial sector is not consistent because almost 500 companies in 2009 achieve second-largest position in earnings in the history of 56 years. It must be noted that this achievement is not resulted from high revenues but it resulted because of decrease in labor cost. As per one research, companies largest part of revenue is reflected from lower payrolls instead of increase in sales and further stated that during this period very less amount of wages is increased (Magdoff Magdoff, (2004). The most effected class of workers is those who have attend their college and get diploma, and also those who studied for the degree. There are many workers who saw that their income collapse in 2009-2010 (Weston, 2012). As per some market observers state that fluctuating nature of profitability is the only reason of difference between the corporate profitability and result for workers. It is clear when corporation is judged on single basis that is stock price then executives of the company try their best to increase their numbers on the cost of neglecting other issues like employees well being or ethics in corporate culture. On the other side there are some other companies also which generally concerned about their employees and try to make policies which treat their employees flexibly. There is one argument which state that it is completely right to sacrifice some jobs to save the complete organization. After analyzing all the above facts it is clear that it become trend for organizations to kick off their employees or deprived their employment benefits for the purpose of their own profitability or to show increase price of stock in the market. After analyzing all the facts it is clear that workers have become disposable in todays global economy because of new trending mentality of managers which give importance to economic benefits and ignore the ethical values, and one more reason of retrenchment of employees are economic aspects which affect alost number of jobs in the state. Pillars Of Society Monologue Essay Paper Example For Students
Pillars Of Society Monologue Essay Paper A monologue from the play by Henrik Ibsen NOTE: This monologue is reprinted from The Collected Works of Henrik Ibsen, vol. vi: The League of Youth/Pillars of Society. Ed. William Archer. New York: Charles Scribner\s Sons, 1912. BERNICK: I find I can talk to you as I can to no one else; I shall conceal nothing from you. I had my share in spreading the rumour. You must not condemn me without remembering how matters stood at the time. As I told you yesterday, I came home to find my mother involved in a whole series of foolish undertakings. Disasters of various kinds followed; all possible ill-luck seemed to crowd upon us; our house was on the verge of ruin. I was half reckless and half in despair. Lona, I believe it was principally to deaden thought that I got into that entanglement which ended in Johan\s going away. You can easily imagine that there were all sorts of rumours in the air after you two had left. It was said that this was not his first misdemeanour. Some said Dorf had received a large sum of money from him to hold his tongue and keep out of the way; others declared she had got the money. At the same time it got abroad that our house had difficulty in meeting its engagements. What more natural tha n that the scandal-mongers should put these two rumours together? Then, as Madam Dorf remained here in unmistakable poverty, people began to say that he had taken the money with him to America; and rumour made the sum larger and larger every day. I clutched at the rumour as a drowning man clutches at straw. I did not contradict it. Our creditors were beginning to press us; I had to quiet themto prevent them from doubting the solidity of the firm. I let it be thought that a momentary misfortune had befallen us, but that if people only refrained from pressing usif they would only give us timeevery one should be paid in full. And every one was paid in full. Yes, Lona; that rumour saved our house and made me the man I am. A lie yes but whom did it hurt, then? Johan intended never to return. Look into any man you please, and you will find at least one dark spot that must be kept out of sight.

The distinction between great and mediocre art
The distinction between great and mediocre art is often subjective and it often cannot be accurately determined by any qualitative or quantitative measurement. The articles presented in this packet touch upon a series of questions such as artistic taste, evaluation of art, and creative courage.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on The distinction between great and mediocre art specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The central idea that the authors emphasize is that artists and critics should focus on what they consider to be beautiful, but not on the assessments made by other people who often can be biased, prejudiced, or simply superficial. Both evaluation of art and creativity require freedom of mind, courage, and ability to go beyond the limits of convention. This is the main idea that permeates each of the readings. The idea that the value of art cannot measured objectively is eloquently illustrated in the a rticle by Jamie Katz who shows that how a seemingly ordinary painting can be transformed into a real masterpiece only because its authorship was attributed to Diego Velazquez (Katz, 62). The main paradox is that for a long time, this picture did not attract the attention of art critics or historians, even though it was not hidden or concealed from them (Katz, 61). It grew to fame only because a single person liked it and conjectured that it could have been created by a famous Spanish painter. The issue is that the painting, itself remained unchanged; it did not acquire any new qualities. Although the author does not pose the question explicitly, the readers may ask themselves what might have happened to this painting if its authorship had not been ascertained. This example suggests that the value of an artwork is often determined on the basis of very subjective criteria.Advertising Looking for critical writing on art? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This is why people should primarily pay attention to their own feelings about a certain work of art, rather than to the authoritative opinions of critics. The thing is that these people often change their opinions. People, who prefer to blindly follow popular trends, deprive themselves of an opportunity to see the value of art. This idea is also reflected in the article Alice’s Wonderland written by Rebecca Mead. This author tells the story of a woman who attempts to establish her own art collection. Alice Walton did not wish to buy pictures that were popular among other art collectors or dealers; she decided to collect the paintings that she liked, namely those ones dedicated to American history (Mead, 34). Certainly, Alice Walton could have made a different choice, for example, she could collect artworks that were praised by critics. Nevertheless, such a choice would run contrary to her own artistic sense. Again, this article illustrates an idea that people should be more independent or courageous when forming their judgment about a work of art. Unfortunately, very often people are rather unwilling to make their own judgment about paintings, films, books, or musical compositions. This is a problem that has been relevant at any time or place. Moreover, it manifests itself in various areas of art. Thus, this argument can be equally applied to people who are engaged in creative work. Adam Gopnik whose article focuses on van Gogh’s life and work, shows that an artists â€Å"bets his life†on his work (55). Moreover, not every person has the courage to depart from existing tradition and create art forms as it was done by Vincent van Gogh who was appreciated only by a very few people, for instance, Paul Gauguin. He was an artist who realized that his paintings would not enjoy popularity during his lifetime. Moreover, he did not expect that his works would earn his material prosperity. In this article, Adam Gopnik descri bes his life as â€Å"making something that no one wants in the belief someone someday will†(55). This quote indicates that art requires courage and determination, and these are the qualities that not everyone possesses. Under such circumstances, an artist has to follow instinct, intuition, and understanding of art. The choice made by Vincent van Gogh may not look very attractive to many artists who may prefer short-term popularity to the mere prospects or hopes of long-term recognition.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on The distinction between great and mediocre art specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The majority of people are more likely follow an established trend instead of creating their own artistic style. Probably, the only thing that motivated van Gogh was hope that someday his paintings will find their audience. Such hope is not sufficient for the majority of people. Creative courage is i mportant for every form of art, including cinematography. In his article Method Man, John Lahr discusses the life and work of Elia Kazan. This person was able to find a new approach to filmmaking and it enabled many actors to show their best qualities. Moreover, he helped many writers such as Tennessee Williams to improve their creative work (Lahr, 54). He can be regarded as a person who shaped modern cinematography, even though his methods were very popular. Yet, the example of Elia Kazan shows that creative work can sometimes be the only thing that can defend a person. His testimony in HUAC (House Committee on Un-American Activities) ruined his reputation among other actors and directors (Lahr, 90). For many people, Kazan’s testimony equaled to betrayal of people who trusted him. It is possible to provide several arguments in favor or against this decision. The ethical aspects of this testimony can be disputed from various perspectives. Yet, Elia Kazan justified it by his w illingness to continue his work that he enjoyed most of all. His films enabled him to withstand the criticism that he faced because of his testimony in HUAC (Lahr, 91). Again, one can remember about Adam Gopnik’s claim according to which an â€Å"artist bets his life†on his work (55). This argument can be applied to Elia Kazan did not want sacrifice his work for the sake of his reputation and even friendship with many other people. Such a step can be taken only by a very few people. For such individuals their creativity and their work are probably the only things that make their life truly valuable.Advertising Looking for critical writing on art? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Creativity and art critique require courage, determination, and sometimes even willingness to become isolated from others. An artist has to ready for misunderstanding or lack of appreciation. His or her understanding of art has to be the major guide. Similarly, people, who want to make their own evaluation of art, must be able to take independent decisions that may run contrary to popular opinion. Such decisions also require courage and willingness to adhere to one’s artistic taste. Moreover, these articles also illustrate that an artist is a person who is willing to stake his life and reputation on his or her work. Free Essays on Think And Use The Body Of Knowledge
THINK AND USE â€Å"THE BODY OF KNOWLEDGE†In the real world, each of us is considered different because people have different opportunities, different purposes and different way of thinking. And of course, people cannot have the same thinking as another. As individuals we base our thinking on what we know or our knowledge. Our knowledge is one aspect of thought that we have chosen to accept. I think that every single person is unique and that no two people are the same. Therefore no two people can ever think the same exact thoughts or feel the same exact feelings. Every person will have his or her own personal ideas about a particular object or subject. That is why there is so many different perceptions for any one object. In our lives, we have to think a lot to deal with reality. We have to control our own destiny. It is very important for us to realize that we control our lives and our minds. We can do only what we can think we can do and only become what we think we can become! This is why we must keep a positive thought in our minds if we want positive things to happen in our lives. We must use our body of knowledge to think and make appropriate choices. It is very hard to define exactly what thinking is. In my opinion, the basic source of knowledge comes from observation, experience, and research. These facts are considered in the process of thinking, and we then have understanding and intelligence. Knowledge understands facts, but thinking is being able to use these Facts in a meaningful way. Knowledge gives us the facts of the problem, but to solve the problem, we need to analyze the problem critically in order to be successful and this requires thinking. Who is a good thinker? A person who has the intelligence because he or she can analyze and process information well. The more intelligent a person is the more control he or she has over humans who are less intelligent. If I am less intelligent than you, then you are smarte...

Population Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Population - Assignment Example Given the economic position of the country and other development as observed in the opening of the Sochi 2014 Opening Ceremony, these facilities are attractive to the young population that will create a strong foundation for the future of the nation. The population shift in Russia is highly due to the poor standards of living. As a result, the mortality rate for the males is high leading to a need for an immediate intervention. Unfortunately, the ban policy adopted by the government has more adverse impacts than advantages. As observed, the number of children adopted by American couples is high thus reducing children-related expenses for the administration (Herszenhorn and Eckholm n.p). With the current poverty and health care status, more children are likely to suffer from malnourishment and diseases increasing infant mortality beyond its present rate. Consequently, the future demography of the country will constrain the government, as dependent ratio will be very high. Herszenhorn, David M., and Erik, Eckholm. "The New York Times." Explain Mysticism and how it relates to Christiany Research Paper
Explain Mysticism and how it relates to Christiany - Research Paper Example ............................................. 6. Conclusion............................................................................................................... Thesis Statement: Religion and Mysticism are complimentary in nature, and Christianity has very closer association with Mysticism that stresses the need for prayer and meditation in one’s life. Introduction Mysticism has often been regarded as concept with a deeper level meaning in almost all religions of the world. It is the close association mysticism with religion that very often leads many to consider it as quite equal to some of the religions. But a closer analysis will certainly unveil mysticism as a different perspective from religious teachings. Even a mere observation will be sufficient enough for unearthing this close association and it is identifiable that some of the religions are proclaiming some of the aspects of mysticism. Among the religions that are very much associated with mysticism Christi anity stands to be a supreme one. Many researchers have clearly recognised this close association and have affirmed the closer relationship of Christianity with mysticism. The proximity between Christianity to mysticism had led many to think to supplement one with another. In a closer look one can find out that these two are different even though some apparent similarities are there. The closeness of mysticism and Christianity paves for the analytical study between these two. The proposed study is aimed to explore the close association between Christianity and Mysticism. Various factors concerning both Christianity and Mysticism will be analysed in the paper and specifically, the researcher will endeavour to establish the fact that religion and Mysticism are complimentary. The essay takes note on the relationship of Christian teachings to mysticism and will analyse the major components of mysticism and Christianity through comparative studies intended to expose their relation. There fore, the study proposes the thesis that, religion and Mysticism are complimentary in nature, and Christianity has very closer association with Mysticism that stresses the need for prayer and meditation in one’s life. What is mysticism? Researchers have often been expressed their difficulty in properly defining mysticism. Of course, the word mysticism is originated from Greek culture. Some regard it as quite similar to asking a foolish question like what beauty is. However, different religions attribute different aspects to mysticism. Many have observed it as more difficult to define than socialism and the words of William Ralph Inge makes it crystal clear when he reveals the various attributes of Mysticism. He says, â€Å"Sometimes it [mysticism] is used as an equivalent for symbolism or allegorism, sometimes for theosophy or occult science; and sometimes it merely suggests the mental state of a dreamer, or vague and fantastic opinions about God and the world†(Inge, 16). It clearly indicates the fact that defining mysticism is not easier as one thinks. The Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary defines mysticism as, ‘the belief that knowledge of God and the real truth can be found through prayer and meditation rather than through reason and the senses.’ A more acceptable fact regarding mysticism can be identified with Margaret Smith when she rightly commented thus, â€Å"Mysticism itself represents something much wider than its derivation: it represents a spiritual tendency which is universal, for we find it in

Cone Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1
Cone - Essay Example Although conclusive comparison data was not obtained, it was discovered that the blue carpet samples produced the maximum damage. Fire hazards are a stark reality in the modern world due to the use of multifarious natural and synthetic construction materials. Evaluation of such materials is therefore of utmost importance to design a fire safety protocol for a prospective new construction as well as for the evaluation of preexisting buildings and materials. The flammability of a material depends upon its chemical composition and the availability of oxygen. Post-fire investigations also need some analytical tool for the forensic investigation to evaluate the extent as well as the cause of damage due to fire. Cone calorimeter is presently considered the best technological tool available for the evaluation and assessment of any material’s reaction to fire. In any physical or chemical reaction if the elements being used up and the products obtained if measured can yield pertinent data about the properties of the substance under study. Cone calorimetry similarly employs the principle of oxygen consumption to determine the net heat of combustion of any organic material. In this experiment, a Cone calorimeter was used to determine the net heat of combustion of three experimental materials – ‘Blue Carpet, Green Carpet and Underlay2’ Based upon the above principle, three materials, a piece of Blue carpet, Green carpet and an Underlay were selected for evaluation of various parameters like the heat of combustion, ignition time and the amounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and smoke produced. The heat released during combustion of a measured weight piece of any of the above three materials was determined by measuring the amount of oxygen consumed in burning the product in a specified period of time. The Cone Calorimeter is a specialized apparatus which consists of a radiant heater in the shape of a cone. The specimen to be tested is set on

Subjective Reports of MDMA Use :: Ecstasy Illegal Drugs Hallucinogens Essays
Subjective Reports of MDMA Use In reading several reports of individuals who have experimented with MDMA several common experiences can be found, but no experiences can be thought of as universal. One of the most commonly reported experiences is a feeling of peace. Some users categorize this experience as a feeling of intense calm. They simply cannot imagine hostile or aggressive feelings towards any other person. This feeling objectively can be observed in the relative sedation of those experiencing a 'high'. In one person's experience, once the MDMA had begun to affect their body in earnest, they felt no desire to move or do anything other then remain sitting where they were. They didn't report so much an inability to move as much as an inability to imagine a situation better then their current situation. As evidenced by the number of dance clubs in which MDMA is used frequently, MDMA clearly does not block physical activity. Some experienced users report that they have a brief window of opportunity after ingesting MDMA to engage in an active behavior (such as dance). After this window is over, they become too entranced in their experience to change anything. I! f they manage to become active during this time, they feel very energized and report the calm as being a more external feeling. This externally manifested calm can be described be such terms as love, oneness, peace, happiness, trust and other such broad positive terms. MDMA users who have experience MDMA use at clubs or dances often comment on groups of users who group together. Reports from users involved in these groups express a synergistic effect of being around others who are using MDMA. Many users who came to social situations alone reported their attempts in finding other users with which to socialize. One user described the "cuddle puddles" in which several users would sit together. These areas would have pillows and water available for the users. The user reported that they would sit, talk and describe their sensations to each other. One of the primary sensations shared was their tactile sensations. A very commonly described effect of MDMA is an increased enjoyment of sensation. All sensations are described as being more interesting, or intense. One common sight described at several raves (underground dance parties) is the surgical mask smeared with mentholated petroleum. Often, users will crush MDMA and dust the inside of the mask with it, or will take MDMA

Film Critique, Why Did I Get Married 2
Why Did I Get Married? Efrem Terrell ENG 225 Intro to Film Professor Nelly Aguilar April 22, 2012 Why Did I Get Married Released in 2007 by Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation, the film Why Did I Get Married? is a comedy and drama that was written, produced, and directed by screen and playwright, Tyler Perry. Depicting the trials and tribulations of marriage, Why Did I Get Married? Was a hit at the box office earning $55,862,886 worldwide (Perry, 2007). Along with several other films and stage productions written and directed by Tyler Perry, the success of Why Did I Get Married? ay be credited to Perry’s expertise in film directing, digital musical selections, and humorous dialogue, along with the film’s dramatic, yet therapeutic storyline on how to sustain a healthy marriage and maintain lifelong friendships. As the director of Why Did I Get Married? , Tyler Perry utilizes incongruous editing in order to establish a central theme for the movie by allowing the audience to get to know each character and establish a theatrical connection with them.As each main character is introduced, Perry jumps around in time displaying each character acting out dramatic and humorous scenes that revealed their true personalities, relationships with the other characters in the film, along with their roles in the movie. While most writers subtly introduce their characters to the audience, movie critics argue that this is an area in Perry’s writing that needs strengthening. According to freelance writer and movie critic, Eric D. Snider (2012), in the film Why Did I Get Married? Tyler Perry’s characters blatantly announce expository dialogue such as, â€Å"I am a Pediatrician,†â€Å"You have control issues,†and â€Å"You could lose about fifty pounds, then I might be somewhat attracted to you. †Movie critics believe that stronger writing would reveal this information without the characters declaring it (Snider, 2012). While direc tors carefully select the best scenes for their movies, they also spend a great deal of time selecting the best soundtrack. Digital musical selections graced the original soundtrack for the film, Why Did I Get Married?.R&B ballads that referenced love, relationships, break-ups, and heart-ache drove the central them of the movie which focuses on the ups and downs of marriage and friendships. Each song from the soundtrack played throughout the movie, helping to tell the story of the film, and draw the audience in by shaping the characters with tempo, range, pitch, and melody. The cinematography for the film, Why Did I Get Married? was performed by Toyomichi Kurita (â€Å"Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married, 2012). Kurita creates strong moods and feelings throughout the film with the use of camera shots, movement, and lighting.Scenes throughout the film are solid and clear creating a natural illusion of the set and atmosphere. The audience is able to relate to the emotions of t he characters due to the imagery created by Kurita’s strong cinematography skills. Scenes throughout the film flowed seamlessly, displaying vibrant lighting, while establishing a strong connection between the audience and the film. Editing provided by Maysie Hoy appeared flawless throughout the film. There was strong cohesion among characters as they appeared to have all been filmed at the same place at the same time. The transitions between scenes throughout the film created a natural setting and a feeling as though the viewers were traveling along on the same journey with the characters as the moved from place to place (Perry, 2007). The storyline of the film Why Did I Get Married? centers around the day-to-day struggles of maintaining solid relationships, successful careers, and strong friendships. In order to resolve marital problems, four married couples, who are old college friends, attended an annual retreat in the cold, wintery mountains of Colorado. While the vacation was intended for married couples only, one of the wives decided to bring along an attractive and single female friend by the name of Trina. Throughout the week-long retreat, damaging secrets are revealed that puts each couple in the position to question their own marital relationships along with their friendships with the other couples. As bouts of infidelity come to light, it is also revealed that the single and seductive Miss Trina has been having an affair with the husband of the woman that referred to her as a friend and invited her to the retreat. The film explores the emotional distress that infidelity, lust, and love may weigh upon a marriage. Continuous battles with issues of commitment, betrayal, and forgiveness force each character in the film to evaluate their lives as individuals and as committed couples (Snider, 2007). Patricia (Janet Jackson) is a highly regarded and very famous psychiatrist. Her book about marriage has just won a very prestigious award. Still, a traged y in her past has driven a wedge into her marriage to architect Gavin (Malik Yoba).Things aren’t much better with said pals; Angela (Tasha Smith) is a loudmouth drunk constantly denigrating her struggling husband Marcus (Michael Jai White). Diana (Sharon Leal) is a driven attorney. Having just made partner, she can’t find time for her young daughter, or depressed spouse (Perry). But the worst situation exists between Shelia (Jill Scott) and Mike (Richard T. Jones). He is constantly calling her fat. He’s also cheating on her with best friend Trina (Denis Boutte). When the group gets together for their annual vacation, everyone is on edge.Soon secrets will be revealed, leaving everyone wondering about the state of their relationship (Perry, 2007). The recurring theme that is raised in Tyler Perry’s film Why Did I Get Married? Is â€Å"Can These Marriages Survive? †The infidelity of two husbands leads to the discussion of the â€Å"80/20 Rule. †The rule simply implies that within a marriage, most people only receive eighty-percent of what they want and need from their partners, leading them to go outside of their relationship in an effort to find what they think they are missing.Usually, it’s not until the spouse has stepped out the relationship that they realize that now only twenty-percent of their needs are being met. At this point, they have left their eighty for their twenty, which is a significant downgrade. Watching a Tyler Perry movie is a strange and ecstatic experience, Perry’s desire for shenanigans, inanity and heightened emotions always makes for an entertaining evening, but his films are in a strange in-between space: between melodrama and traditional drama, between lternative cinema and Hollywood style, and between black authenticity and pure elitism. Through it all, what vexes film scholars especially critics, is how style, content, auteurism and culture clash and miss each other in Tyler P erry’s films. Still Perry is one of a handful of black filmmakers- including Antoine Fuqua, John Singleton, Spike Lee, and Lee Daniels, whom can all actually raise money for wide release films. Perry films are primarily ways to talk about black progress and authenticity in a â€Å"post-racial†world, and they absorb all the baggage involved in that project. They are moral tales about maintaining traditional family structures (including, usually, men at the head), the importance of the church and elders, even at the exclusion of gays, and not always, though sometimes, of others: like loose and lost women, drug users etc (Snider, 2007). As of November 1, 2007, on the review Aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 46% of the critics gave the film positive reviews, based on 33 reviews. On Metacritic, the film had an average score of 54 out of 100 based on 12 reviews.Paul Grenada said that while â€Å"there are times where the script seems stiff, it teaches without hammering, and you l eave the movie feeling good about what you saw. †Giving the movie a B-, Entertainment Weekly said that Perry is of the â€Å"spell-everything-in-capital-letters and act-it-out-loudly schools,†but added that â€Å"one performance glistensâ€â€Jill Scott’s as the sad, heavyset Shelia, who locates the faith that’s the source of love. †Time magazine gave the film a B and called it the â€Å"usual artless mix of broad comedy, teary confessions and spiritual uplift. †In the opening weekend, the film grossed $21. million in 3,105 theaters in the United States and Canada, ranking #1 at the box office. In the second weekend, the film slipped to #2 in the box office charts, with a gross of $12. 1 million, bringing the 10-day total to over $38 million. In total, the film domestically grossed $55,862,886 (Gleiberman, 2007). The awards and nominations that the Tyler Perry’s film â€Å"Why Did I Get Married†received were from the Imag e Awards, it was nominated for Outstanding Motion Picture, Jill Scott who played Shelia in the film was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, TylerPerry himself was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, and then there’s Janet Jackson whom won the Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. The issue of matrimony is not a new one to Tyler Perry, almost all of his efforts, both for the stage and screen, have focused on relationships growing, struggling, dissolving, or playing out their post-breakup end games. The decision to create a single overview on the subject seems unnecessary at best. Yet Perry is nothing if not knowledgeable, especially when it comes to his audience. He clearly understands that, even though he’s offering the same old stories, they can’t get enough of the way he tells them. For his film adaptation of the couple’s comedy why did I Get Married? He may have altered the ver y purpose of his otherwise amicable preaching. But at this point in Perry’s career his ability to sell movie tickets in spite of poor critical reception is no surprise, the actor, author, and filmmaker has gone from promoting his own plays to becoming a full-fledged brand, one that, although created outside of the Hollywood machine, is causing some industry people to take notice (Gleiberman 2007).The film is filled with tears, laughter, and shocking disappointments as friends are betrayed and relationships fall apart due to the foibles of marriage. Have you taken a good look at your marriage lately? Is your marriage what you thought it would be? Have you had to deal with issues of commitment or betrayal or forgiveness? Is there a time when you seriously considered whether or not to stay with your spouse? Over the years, have you had to figure out a way to maintain true love and a solid relationship even during difficult times? And during the rough patches, have you ever secret ly asked yourself the question: â€Å"Why Did I Get married? †Why Did I Get Married is one of Tyler Perry’s greatest films yet; leaving some members of the audience filled with emotions as they wonder to themselves, â€Å"Why did I get married? †, while others question, â€Å"Should I stay married? †REFERENCES Gleiberman, Owen (October 26, 2007), â€Å"Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? †Retrieved from Entertainment Weekly (961):51Snider, E. Greece s Impact On The World - 1360 Words
A Blast From the Past The way to better the world is to go back to the past and learn the ways of those who came before and learned from their mistakes; sort of like time traveling. When going back in time and comparing the ancient civilizations of Rome and Greece to today, the root of our knowledge are greatly influenced on the minds who have lived at that time. Some may ask which civilization had the most impact on United States and the world?
